For visitors, seekers and the curious…
Who we are and what we do
First, thanks for your interest. You are welcome to visit on Sundays at 9 a.m. at the community building behind the West Hills Friends Church, 7425 SW 52nd Ave. Portland.
Quakers gather together from diverse spiritual perspectives and experiences. Quakers are formally known as “The Religious Society of Friends.”
All Friends open themselves to “leadings” as they join in gathered silence.
Some Friends believe that in the silence they are led “by God;” others experience being led “by the Spirit” or “by the Light.” Some are “non-theistic” and attach no words to their experience of “the beyond within.” In our rich diversity, we consider ourselves “radically inclusive.”
Friends everywhere strive to nurture communities of peace, integrity, equality and simplicity.
Hillsdale Quakers, like many Quaker gatherings, have no pastor or hierarchy of “elders.” Nor do we have creeds or sacraments.

Our 45 minutes of silent worship together is the heart of our gathering.
Although we experience the silence differently, we are spiritually one.
In normal times, we sit together in a circle of chairs. Some close their eyes; some don’t. Our dress is casual and comfortable. Our posture and manner are of our choosing.
On occasion, someone may be moved to speak. The words should be spoken so all can hear. We allow a respectful time of reflection before another speaks.
After silent worship, all are invited to share a particular joy or concern or leading that may have arisen in the silence.
We close our time together by returning to silence for a short period of reflection.
We often visit socially at the “rise” of the gathering.
Our time together usually lasts no more than 90 minutes.
